Introduction

A wonderfully simple free RapidWeaver theme inspired by some of the basic templates that shipped with the (now deceased) iWeb app a few years ago. The 'light on dark' default colour scheme makes Black absolutely ideal for small photography or portfolio websites. Black is easy to use, but equally it includes lots of expert features like a FreeStyle banner, Twitter Bootstrap, Font Awesome Icons, a lightbox, responsive video and retina images.

Navigation

Black utilises a simple split navigation layout. This basically means that your parent (top level) pages will be displayed horizontally at the top of the page. Any associated child (subpage links) will be displayed in the sidebar container. Split navigation layouts offer an excellent balance between a website that is easy for your users to navigate, but one which still supports multiple levels of pages.

Responsive

As you'd expect, Black is fully responsive and optimised for mobile and tablet devices. Using Black, you can build a single website which all users of various devices and screen sizes can access. Black removes the need for building different websites for different devices. Additionally content like images and video will be scaled-down to fit smaller screens.

FreeStyle banner

The optional banner container in Black is FreeStyle enabled. Think of FreeStyle banners as an empty canvas, into which you can place almost any type of content, including text, static images, video or slideshows. You can use the FreeStyle stack to setup and embed your content, Alternatively use ExtraContent3 or the standard FreeStyle code snippets documented in the Knowledgebase. With FreeStyle, in next-to-no-time you'll have a brilliant banner setup to grab the attention of your website visitors! Five beautiful example banner images are included in this theme, measuring 140px wide and 600px tall.

Black also features a CTA (call to action) container that is layered over the FreeStyle banner. This means that your banner can provide a useful function and enable you to display bold text or links for improved user engagement.

Content and sidebar

The content and sidebar regions in Black support most RapidWeaver page types, including styled text, HTML code, Stacks, photo albums, blogs, WeaverPix and contact forms. By default the sidebar is hidden in Black, but this can be turned on in the theme settings and floated either left or right of the main content container. On smaller screens, the sidebar is displayed below the main content container. The sidebar will need to be enabled, if using page types like a Blog, so that your tag cloud and category links will be displayed.

Scope to modify

Black can be extensively modified with lots of basic CSS markup to change the style or layout of pages. Everything including the font styling and banner can be modified. Dedicated custom.css and custom.js files located within the theme contents follow the tradition of all other ThemeFlood themes; in providing a convenient spot to write and apply code site-wide, using your preferred code editor. Other aspects like inclusion of embedded web font faces are definitely feasible.

ExtraContent

This RapidWeaver theme has support for ten ExtraContent containers, positioned in various parts of the page. ExtraContent gives you the ability to break out of the normal RapidWeaver editable regions and create more intricate page designs. To embed content within any of the ExtraContent containers, you can use the standard code snippet or an ExtraContent stack.
