As the name suggests, Black & White is a fairly minimalist RapidWeaver theme with a default black and white colour scheme. First released publicly in late 2006, Black & White has always maintained a strong following with bloggers, artists and photographers wanting a simple yet robust RapidWeaver theme to work with. The high contrasting colour scheme lends itself well to websites which are particularly content-heavy, and the minimalist style gives content that extra bit of breathing space.

Black & White is largely devoid of any graphics, so pages created with this RapidWeaver theme load very quickly, with minimal bandwidth. This theme is quite possibly one of the lightest addon RapidWeaver themes available on the market. Steps have been taken like calling Javascript code from the end of pages, to improve page rendering speed. Black & White is compatible with CSS consolidation and compression in RapidWeaver, together with Gzip compression on the web server.

Build bigger

The optimised nature of Black & White lends this theme well towards building larger websites of up-to several hundred pages. The option is provided in the theme style settings to switch between either a split or sidebar block navigation layout. Unlike a drop-down menu, these more primitive navigation layouts can handle many more page links and are easy for end users to find their way around.

Style settings

Just about every aspect of the Black & White theme can be customised. Numerous colour settings are provided which can be used to adjust almost every aspect of the page. A slew of other useful theme settings are included, such as title bar positioning, body background, font faces, font styles, logo placement, sidebar width and position, navigation layout and theme width. Useful miscellaneous theme style settings like fade-in allow you to have the page fade into view after loading, and settings like splash screen let you create an effective landing page at the entrance to your website.

Black & White does not have a true header or banner container as such, although ExtraContent4 can double-up as a convenient banner container, within the space above the content container. This ExtraContent container is also FreeStyle enabled, so it can be used with the standard FreeStyle code snippet or the free FreeStyle slideshow stack. To make Black & White a banner-less RapidWeaver theme was quite a bold design decision to make; but many existing users are appreciative of the extra speed and flexibility this has promoted.

This is a fully responsive RapidWeaver theme; meaning that you can opt for a maximum-width, which then scales down on smaller screens (without horizontal scrollbars appearing). Black & White harnesses the RAFT (Responsive Adaptive Framework for Themes) to provide excellent tablet and smart phone optimisations. Aspects of content like images and basic video can be set to behave responsively as well. So Black & White is very much a future-proofed RapidWeaver theme.

Be social

Black & White provides support for a social media bar. This ultra-flexible container utilises ExtraContent1 and can be configured to display a horizontal bar or a floating box of social networking links. Numerous positioning options are provided, so you can play-around with the social media bar and find a style combination that works perfectly for your website layout. Into the social bar, you can place icons for various social media and bookmarking services. This in turn provides a great method for people to share or bookmark your website easily.

Black & White is compatible with all major web browsers, including IE7, IE8, IE9, IE10, IE11, and the latest versions of Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Opera too. It's also a theme that plays well with lots of popular RapidWeaver page style plugins and Stack elements. For people not afraid to delve into HTML code, both the Bootstrap 3.0 toolkit and Font Awesome 4.0 icons are supported in the latest versions of Black & White. These give you the ability to include extra functionality and embellishments in your page designs.

Theme compatibility

Black & White has been diligently developed to work reliably with all major web browsers; ensuring your completed website will look and function to a high standard. Because Black & White is responsive, you can expect it to work well on screens of various shapes and sizes. In particular, you can expect Black & White to work well in the following web browsers, which we've tested the theme with:

  • Internet Explorer 9
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Safari 8
  • Chrome 40
  • Firefox 35
  • Opera 27
  • Maxthon 4.4
  • TorBrowser 4.0

Black & White has been tested on various popular handheld devices, including a mixture of Apple and Android tablets, iPods and smartphones. Particular attention was paid towards how easy it is for users of these touch devices to navigate websites published using Black & White. You should find pages published using Black & White load quickly and consume less bandwidth, compared with many competing RapidWeaver themes.

Some scripts used by Black & White are 'dual-called'. Using the example of jQuery, some special markup is used in Black & White to determine what browser or version is viewing the webpage. We can then intelligently ensure the web browser is served the most compatible and optimised version of the script possible.

As always, final compatibility of completed webpages published with Black & White boils-down to several other important factors. The format of content or the type of addons used to build a page can have a significant impact on compatibility (for example, some web browsers do not support embedded video or sound files in particular formats or presentation). Additionally the web server hosting the website can also sometimes impact the compatibility of completed web pages. Likewise there may be occasions when plugins or extensions installed in a web browser cause issues; such as blocking social networking icons from displaying or blocking links from opening in new windows. As always, we invite you to download a free demo version of Black & White yourself; enabling you to run more detailed tests against specific content types or addons. We're happy to browser test completed websites published using Black & White at no extra cost.

This is your space! We would love to hear any feedback you have about Black & White; including general questions, feature requests, things you think should be improved or reviews. We would also greatly welcome any links to websites you've built using Black & White and we'll provide you with coupon codes towards the purchase of future themes and stacks (please contact us after submitting your link).
