IntroductionIf you need to get a quality image portfolio online quickly, then Xense could be exactly the theme you need! Not only does Xense look visually stunning in any modern web browser or device, but this theme is loaded with a broad array of customisable style and colour settings.
Within a short space of time, it would be feasible to build not just any-old website; but a complete immersive experience for your web visitors. A website which will captivate your site visitors and leave a lasting impression. Wherever you need to showcase your products or services to potential customers, Xense could be ideal.
Xense goes against convention. This radical theme design will help you build the online portfolio you never thought was possible with RapidWeaver. And unlike starting from a blank canvas, all the complicated work and pixel-pushing has been done for you already.
Background HistoryXense has quite a long history. Original versions were fixed-width and non-responsive. A couple of additional 'speciality' versions became available; which had variations to the navigation layout or background content. There were various versions named things like 'Xense-YouTube, Xense-Plus, Xense-Responsive', Xense-Flickr and suchlike. In recent times, we have merged all the best features from these different themes into one single, simple theme named Xense. This new version of Xense is easy to use, fully mobile responsive, features a simple drop-down navigation layout and includes a background slideshow.
Setup with StacksThe background slider is very easy to configure with the Stacks plugin. You simply need to download and install the free Henk's Slider stack using this link. This stack requires the Stacks plugin, version 3 or above. Stacks is not included with Xense.
Install the stack into Stacks, by dragging and dropping the stack icon onto your RapidWeaver dock icon. Launch RapidWeaver and in your project file add a new Stacks page type (if you don't already have a Stacks page in your website). Open the Stacks library and search for Henk's Slider. Drag and drop a copy of the stack into your page. Click the blue '+' button to add images to your slider.
These should be images you've added to your project as Resources or already uploaded to a directory on your web server. Simply provide the links to these images. Ideally images should be less-than 500KB each, to promote faster page loading and smoother playback. Slideshow settings can be adjusted in the theme or the slideshow stack itself.
Not using Stacks? No problem! The demo download project for Xense includes a page called Styled Text. In here, you can access the code snippet (in the custom header box) needed to configure the background slider on a non-Stacks page. This is good to use for page types like the RapidWeaver blog, styled text, Markdown, HTML code or contact form.
Displaying a Single Background ImageJust use either of the two slideshow methods above, but only include a single image in your slider. In the stack settings, you can turn-off slideshow options like thumbnails, navigation, captions and progress indicators. The slideshow plugin (built into the theme) will now load your single image.
Using RapidWeaver 7 and above, you can now supply a background image to use through the Banner Image drop zone in your General Settings or the Page Inspector. Within the theme Miscellaneous group of style settings, uncheck the option marked Hide RapidWeaver Banner Background. This will allow any CSS background image applied to the page body to display. The demo site for Xense contains a page called Static Background that explains the process in more detail.
Responsive DesignThe traditional fixed width design doesn't work any more. Web design needs to be adaptive. The layout needs to be automatically adjusted to fit all display resolution and devices. Rest assured, Xense is a fully responsive theme that looks and works great across a wide range of devices and modern web browsers. Using a theme like Xense, you no longer need to build multiple websites for different screen sizes.
Font AwesomeAs mentioned already, Xense includes the complete Font Awesome Icon library (the current version is shown in the theme details on this page). With Font Awesome you have over 500 icons at your disposal, in any colour and any size you like. And they are completely free for commercial use. No extra addons or plugins need to be purchased, to use basic Font Awesome icons in Xense.
MoreThe free trial version of Xense can be downloaded using this link. There is no time limit imposed on the demo version, but page navigation links are disabled in the demo version. Watermarks may appear in parts of the page (like the banner or footer). Purchasing Xense provides you with a licensed copy of Xense; without any demo restrictions applied.
Clicking this link will take you to a sample website published using Xense. This may give you a better insight into how this theme looks and behaves. If you're interested to see how the demo website was built, the same project file can be downloaded here and opened in RapidWeaver. Feel free to use this file as the basis for a new website.
